I’m working on some upgrades to our backyard raised garden area, and couldn’t resist setting up outside in this beautiful weather so I could soak up more sunshine. This board will have one side visible and touchable, so I want it to be smooth, and planing was the better option over sanding.
I simply love to hand plane a piece of lumber. It’s something that I have done on occasion when I am relaxing in the shed at night and am just looking for a meditative task, regardless of whether I am actually working on a project that needs a piece of wood to be planed.
And I get to bring about the transformation from rough construction lumber with milling saw marks and splinters just waiting to embed in your hands, into a smoothed and squared piece of wood that you want to run your fingers over to trace the grain lines.
